how to fix grub error 16 from kubuntu install?

Josef - I became unsure of one of my statements, so I did a search.

Hi, Josef.

Boot from a Linux Live CD to repair your grub setup.  I can't advise you on error 16, but any necessary changes can be made from a CD boot.

Boot from *any* Windows disk in rescue mode to fix the mbr, but of course that only will get you back where you started.  If you don't have such a disk, . . . where are you located?  I'm sure something can be arranged . . .

Sorry for lack of details, but keywords from above will lead to at least a backout path.

I just installed kubuntu from the live CD on an ibm t40 with xp 
(no install/rescue xp cd) and now have a grub error 16 so can't 
boot anything.  I've searched the net, but have not found a way 
to restore mbr and salvage what is on the hd.  Can't find a way 
to restore mbr on my knoppix cd. 

how can I fix this problem?
