Installing Ubuntu on old hardware

I kinda lost track of where Linux has gone.  My last install was Debian Potato say 3 years ago maybe longer.  Have had some dealings at the command line on other's Unix or Linux but have not done much for myself.

So how many Ubutu's are there.  I've heard of Kubuntu, Xubuntu, and just plain old Ubuntu?

Yes, there's a text-based installer. Having just done it this very
morning, I can say for sure! The text install is NOT any harder. It has
the same options, as far as I could see, as the GUI installer. It may
have more, but the "do the normal thing" options were still there. Much,
MUCH less painful than the GUI for 192K machines.

My daughter is now happily back on myspace, and I have eliminated the
last Windows machine in the house. :)

I wouldn't worry about that too much.

I ended up using straight up Ubuntu (Gnome) on the 300MHz, 192K laptop
and it's running as well as you might expect: not snappy but usable. If
you're not stuck on Gnome or KDE then I'd recommend Xubuntu to avoid
some of the bloat.
