funny directory?

It was a straight cut and paste into gmail.  The space is not visible
in the Terminal window.  I also only see it in the exit-hooks line in
your quoted text (not the enter line). I did highlight it and click
the " button and then set the font to a fixed font.  Here it is again
after telling gmail to make this a plain text message before doing the
paste.
