New laptop woes - looking for help

Same story after rebooting AND refreshing sources. gpg 1.4.2 is installed
and /var/lib/smart/packages/hplip-1.6.9-5.pm.1.i586.rpm exists though I have
no clue how to check its signature. Based on gpg --help, I tried

larry at lapdog2:~> gpg --verify /var/lib/smart/packages/hplip-
1.6.9-5.pm.1.i586.rpm
gpg: no valid OpenPGP data found.
gpg: the signature could not be verified.
Please remember that the signature file (.sig or .asc)
should be the first file given on the command line.

So I guess I am doing something wrong.
