How to make sure it's really gone?

See the following copy/pasted email IF you want to
toss the drive away after removing data. Let it roar
for a few hours depending on how large it is..say 20
or so passes. USE Knoppix disk running on ram to do
it.

If the hard drive still works, boot knoppix on the 
machine, then run 
'badblocks -svvw /dev/hda1' or whatever the drive is. 
That will zero 
everything in the disk. I've not found a recovery 
utility yet that will find 
anything after that.

It made a partially working hd, found by knoppix into
one on the next reboot not found at all! Why? Block
zero was also written over! Just run it till you are
sure it is written over many times.
