Just to be clear someone who was awarded $830,000 in 2001 for the
Takeda award as well as a Mac Arthur Fellow (whose payout is at least
$200,000+) who sits a top a multi million dollar NGO (Free Software
Foundation) is poor? Certainly I don't consider RMS a Bill Gates and
he lives a very meager lifestyle (purposefully), but honestly I don't
think he lacks any kind of cash flow.
As far as jealousy goes... I don't see how someone who created some
of the most widely used tools in the world (GNU tool chain, GCC and
Emacs) has penis envy against other developers. Furthermore, Free
Software as a whole probably has a foothold of users only rivaled
with Microsoft and friends. Personally I don't think RMS is jealous
and/or poor.
However, I do think he feels dis-respected (some times rightfully and
often times not). If you listen to what he complains about and what
bothers him for a large part (for example the whole GNU\Linux vs
Linux) thing. It really boils down to him (and his beliefs) likely
not feeling properly acknowledged.
You can like or dislike the guy all you want, but to infer that he
has no original ideas, never created anything new and just rehashes
old things over and over is largely inaccurate.
My two cents.
