as you mention in your other email, dd will not work with directories.
but you do bring up a good point that I missed before:

if your users are not exactly the same on both boxes the ownership needs
to be set with chown on the new system.  It is probably easiest to make
sure your users have the same ids on both systems before copying.

the only users that really matter are the ones listed in /home since
that is what you are copying.
