Then you are left with running leaner apps, and turning off daemons you
don't need. Sounds like you're well on your way with leaner window
manager, email, etc.
You might also spend some quality time with "top" and "vmstat" (or
whatever incarnation it is now). There might be some particular thing
slowing you down, and maybe you can do something about it.
