As for the AzTec Free-Net, we could probably check with
 "Randy Wertz" <rwertz at aztecfreenet.org>,
but I think the softtware they put on initially
(after doing a super-erase and low-level FORMAT of the HD)
probably depends upon what the computer will be
used for.
For accessing www.aztecfreenet.org itself, all that is
typically needed would be (I think) a terminal emulator
(for a connection via telnet or - typically - dialup)
that can act like a VT-100 "or equivalent" terminal.
   Some of the Aztec users (especially lately) are
vision impaired, so they are not too interested in GUIs.
they might well be using DOS or something like that.
Although some of them might want software that can
do voice output (and maybe input, too), or possibly
some Braille output.  I think Braille would require some
specialized hardware, too.
    In some cases, users might be planning to do more
with the computer, than just use it for Aztec.  In that
case they would probably want to install either Gnu/
Linux or windows - or OS X if a Mac.
