kernel development / debugging

Does anyone have any good resources on debugging low level kernel
issues? I am working on porting Linux to an embedded platform based on
the XScale processors. I have downloaded the Linux patches for the
development board for the processor, but I am having some issues with
file system drivers (jffs2) and such. I basically have serial port
access to a terminal and that is about it when it comes to visibility.
Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
