Is the hard drive you're trying to write to formatted NTFS or FAT32? If
it's formatted NTFS you won't be able to write to it. I have heard of
people that were able to get write access to an NTFS partition under
Linux. I've also read that these attempts aren't always stable and can
result in a loss of data on the NTFS partition.

Try this. Get one of those portable USB thumb drives. Knoppix will
detect them and let you write to them. If you have one and the data you
want to save is too big for it, create a FAT32 partition on your hard
drive. If you don't want to do this, get one of those external hard
drives that plugs into a USB port. Just make sure it has a FAT32
partition on it.
