I would think you do want to install it. It may be on your distribution CD if
you can't get to the net. I haven't used apt-get, but every other package
manager I've used had an option to download without installing. Maybe someone
else could grab it for you, and put it on a CD or something.

The ifconfig list you showed before showed eth0 as your active interface,
which should be the case if you only have one. Thus the above line should be
iface eth0 inet dhcp
