IIRC, the GnuPG software overwrites a file 30 times if you tell it to shred.
Could be faulty memory, but that's what I was thinking I remembered.

If I was worried about it, I wouldn't be satisfied with holes drilled into
the platter. That leave sections of the disk where some data could still be
retrieved.
