There appears, from the above link and links in that link, etc., to be a
combination of issues at play here:

- - udev is slow making the /dev/ttyUSB devices so pilot-link and other
apps timeout looking for them before they get created. This is a kernel
issue starting with 2.6.12-1.1372_FC3.

- - The pilot-link API changed a some point and the gnome-pilot and other
apps were not yet updated to handle it. FC3 and FC4 included the new
pilot-link beta with new APIs but the user apps were still on the old API.

- - It is still possible that certain palm devices are not in the proper
config files.

I am currently working on FC3. According to the references, the best
version of pilot-link to use is pilot-link-0.12.0-pre4. This is not in
the FC3 repositories so I downloaded the source from
http://www.pilot-link.org/node/166 and am compiling them now.

FC4 update-testing repositories should have the new pilot-link package
so I'll try installing it via yum when I get to that computer, probably
not tonight.

After that I will follow the "bypass udev" step in the above link and go
from there.
