As much as I don't like proprietary technologies, I really do like AD
over NT4.  We recently implemented it over here, and in spite of a
little "growing pain" (samba auth against the PDC emulator) it's a
very smooth system.  But, if I had my way, it would have been LDAP
with a Samba NT4 domain.  (was -> <- that close, but the rep from
Microsoft oo'ed and aah'ed the execs with AD stuff)

Probably the same reason we do anything: curiousity and rebelling ;)
That, and saving the company money in the long run.
