Primary energy sources (ones that don't require "humans" to put energy in-front of it to produce energy):
Solar
Geothermal
Wind (Solar induced)
Tidal
Fission Nuke
Fusion Nuke
Agriculture - animal/plant waste, wood burning (stored Solar)
Coal (stored Solar)
Oil (stored Solar)
Natural Gas (stored Solar)
Producing Hydrogen for energy requires energy and that "bootstrap" energy must come from somewhere. It can only come from the items in the list above for it to make sense. We are soon running out of Oil/Nat. Gas and Coal is not that much far behind (300 years or so). So that leaves us with the rest on the list.
