Release notes say minimums are 2GB for desktop and 500MB for server.

My Ubuntu 5.10 laptop install is using about 3.6GB for the OS:

root at jet:/# du -h --max-depth=1 --exclude={home,var,root,proc}
48K     ./lost+found
37M     ./etc
8.0K    ./media
3.1G    ./usr
4.1M    ./bin
35M     ./boot
2.9M    ./dev
336M    ./lib
24K     ./mnt
8.0M    ./sbin
64K     ./tmp
0       ./sys
4.0K    ./srv
42M     ./opt
4.0K    ./initrd
3.6G    .
