This may be because nowadays card readers that read
only one format are rare. A couple of weeks ago I
picked up a 9-in-1 card reader for the same reason the
originator of this thread needs one -- so I could plug
in the SD cards I use in my digital camera. I walked
into CompUSA (rather than Fry's because it's real close
to my house and it's a low-dollar item) and walked out
two minutes later with my reader. Hot-plugged it into
the system and it came right up. Meanwhile I also now
have a reader for all the other types of storage
devices, even though I really only need it at the
moment for SD cards.

As for which ones do and don't work right, I haven't
got a clue, but I'd expect most of them do.
