SmartPM "readonly mode"?

My Smart Package Manager went stupid this evening.

Short Story:
Don't try to run smart when ksmarttray is running.

Long Story (ere is the sequence):

#smart --gui &

This produced a print that the 'gtk' library (or something like that)
was not available.  ????

#yum remove smart smart-gui smart-update ksmarttray

This removed them all but not 'smart-gui'  ????

#yum install smart smart-gui smart-update ksmarttray

This installed them all without errors.

#smart --gui &

This popped up a box stating that "Configuration is in readonly mode"
and on clicking OK, closes and no smart runs.

#rm -rf /var/lib/rpm/__db*
#rpm --rebuilddb
(wait a while)
#smart --gui &

This again popped up a box stating that "Configuration is in readonly
mode" and on clicking OK, closes and no smart runs.

#ps aux|grep rpm

None running

#ps aux|grep smart
root      3414  0.0  0.1  2900  692 ?        S    Jul11   0:00
/usr/sbin/smartd

Hmmm... Maybe ksmarttray runs smart in the background...

Quit ksmarttray.  Do:

#smart --gui &

Smart runs!
