Recording from MIC

HellOOO!

I'm running FC4 - very few apt packages available for it.
I am trying to record my kids' voices in various stages of glee and distress
(they seem to coincide).  I have KRec, and I have enabled the mic input from
KMix, I can hear the output, from smacking the mic, through the speakers yet I
cannot get krec to actually record anything or even show input from the nic via
the vu meter.

Any advice?
