Resolution for Ubuntu

Anyone know how to change the resolution on Ubuntu? I see a menu item 
for it but it won't let me make the change. I'm assuming because I'm 
running off of disk. at this point I'm not sure if there is a file 
somewhere on the hardrive or not. The computer was last installed with 
FC 2 but I think somethings wrong with the hard drive. I just use it for 
company to have access to the internet.
