Linux question, newby.

Hi, I am new to the list.
I am visually impaired, and am going to try to eithre install linux on my windows xp sp2 computer, or run it off a cd, the prefered method.
Just wondering if anyone has any suggestions on how I could go about this, what packages to use, etc.
