FWIW, I've used lots of Adaptec SCSI cards and have never had one fail.
If you've already done this plz ignore... I'd reseat the scsi card, then
swap in new, known-good scsi cables if the flakyness persists. I've lost
track of how many times that's fixed an unreliable server. You didn't
mention what the flakyness is, but if you're seeing blocks remapped
that'd suggest a failing drive.
btw, I don't have any experience w/ those Compaq RAID controllers,
sorry.
