Boot Up Freezing on MySQL Startup

If I recall correctly, mysqld doesn't behave properly when you start it,
and keeps the terminal. Add a & to that to force it to background.
As for your non boot problem, whip out your rescue disk and boot from it.
You *DO* have a rescue disk, don't you? =)
