lilo is being a jerk

I'm trying to use lilo as the standalone bootloader for my system. I have 
installed lilo in the MBR of /dev/hda using the command:
'lilo -b /dev/hda'

This is my lilo.conf:

# Begin /etc/lilo.conf

image=/boot/vmlinuz-2.4.19
label=lfs
root=/dev/hda1
read-only

#End /etc/lilo.conf

My system will not boot at all, I get the lilo prompt then a message saying 
'decompressing kernel...' and then it reboots. What have I forgotten to do?
