Problems with network configuration

I am trying to setup one of my machines with a fixed internal IP address 
instead of getting one from DHCP. I used ifconfig to change the IP address 
for eth0, but how do I make it permanent? Every time I reboot, the machine 
gets the address from my router via DHCP.
