pppd hangs after connecting with a winmodem

The trick here is to isolate the problem. The first question in my mind
is this a ppp or winmodem problem? If possible, put a serial modem on the
system and try it out. If the problem persists, try enabling debug in
your pppd configuration to get some more information. If the kernel is
panicing, it may be helpful to send the syslog messages to a remote
system.
FWIW, I really don't think the lock file would cause this problem.
