ADSL on a PCI Card

Hi Alan,

Well, there are two factors on which DSL modem you can use with your ISP.
The most important factor is compatibility. Qwest, for instance, uses DMT
as the line coding for their ADSL service. This is also known as the ITU
T1.413 standard. If you use an ISP that is a Qwest Megabit DSL hosting
partner, then you could use any modem that supports DMT (T1.413). But,
the other factor is technical support. At Amerion, we tend to support ehe
DSL modems recommended by the telcos in each of the regions where we offer
DSL. In the case of Qwest, we support the Cisco 678, Intel 2200 and 3200,
and the new Actiontec R1520SU. As long as your alternate DSL modem
supports the DMT (T1.413) standard, you may use it with our service, but
you'll need to know what you're doing, because we may not be able to
support a DSL modem other than those we recommend. This is not
necessarily meant to be mean or proprietary toward our customers, it is a
matter of the knowledge-base of our technicians. Since nobody can know
everything there is to know about all networking equipment, we must focus
on that equipment we support. In our case, if you wish to use alternative
equipment, we'll do our best to provide the best possible support, but
there would certainly be no guarantees or reasonable expectation of 100
percent certainty that we would be able to make it work for you. This is
just a matter of managing expectations on both ends of the connection.
:-)
