A few things:
RedHat 8.0 is out and available
Someone hinted that RedHat 8.0 has trouble with Palm Pilot syncing in
general (at the moment)
I prefer Mandrake 9.0 :-P
In my opinion, the best option is a "fresh" install (as opposed to the
RedHat 7.3->8.0 upgrade path). Although your home directory may easily
be preserved, you will essentially be starting from scratch. The
choice is yours.
Disclaimer: I had the same problems that you described, and it was just
as troublesome for me to get around them. Since the newer distribution
version has been released, I have not had a problem. That does not
guarantee you will share my experience.
PS: On Mandrake 9.0, when you hit the HotSync for the Visor, a link to
jPilot is created on your desktop. When you have completed the sync,
this icon goes away. I certainly found it to be a nice touch.
PPS: Keep in mind my praise about Debian for its upgrade tools before
making your decision.
