funky kde windows

This is really annoying, it seems that some applications line xine and 
electric have windows with a bunch of vertical lines inside of them. 
Other applications are just fine though. The version of kde that I am 
running is 3.01 and I don't see anything on the KDE bug reports page on 
this. I figure that something somewhere is not set right but I just 
don't have time to poke through config files to see if something is out 
of whack. Would anyone happen to have any suggestion as to what to look for?
Other info that may be pertinent:
kernel is 2.4.18
xserver is 4.2.0
