Training

I would like to offer my services designing advertisements, flyers, etc.,
and teaching the newbiest of the newbie classes. I'm a former English and
journalism instructor who has recently migrated to Linux, and I'm currently
teaching an online Linux class for Fort Hays State University (it's in
Kansas, where I used to live). (I'm probably not really qualified to teach
it, but I think they were desperate, and I volunteered since I used to copy
edit for and contribute to Linux.com, and I have, as my husband says,
"huevos grandes.")

I'm thinking of people like my sister, who might otherwise be interested in
Linux, but who thinks that the language used by "computer people" sounds
like the grown-ups in the Peanuts cartoons. ("Mwomp, mwomp, mwomp-mwomp.")
Online courses are great, but sometimes it helps to have others around who
are trying to figure out the same things you are. I'm a fairly
non-threatening "mommy" type person, so if you have die-hard MS-bound
friends or relatives that you are trying to convert, this may be the way to
do it. (I'm in North Phoenix, BTW, near Cactus and 32nd.)

I'm also interested in attending (as a student) classes on MySQL and PHP. I
have books and other sources out the wazoo on these topics, but I think I'd
learn better with others around to laugh at my mistakes.

Well, I think there are a number of proposals on the table already.

I've been thinking of placing a classified in the newspaper inviting newbies
to attend the meetings. I'd be happy to do this once a month at my expense
but right now I don't see what PLUG has to offer some one just getting
interested in Linux. A training/mentoring program would go a long way toward
meeting that need.
