depends on your distro. Generally ifconfig or netconfig will get you what you want. And there should be native drivers for the 3c509 in your kernel. If you want the card to process data faster then load
the driver into the kernel as opposed to a module (not sure if network card drivers can be loaded as mods but they should be). If you install the driver as a module then you can shut down the nic when you
want (ie a security compromise).
Read your networking how-to for more help on setting up ethx.
