IDE Raid install

I am having trouble installing Mandrake 8.2 on a promise fastrack 100
raid (for mirror).

The bios claims the raid is up and running.  In the scsi install section
I install the ataraid driver and it claims to find the device.  The
install proceeds ok except the two drives on the raid appear in the
partitioning section as two separate drives instead of one.  I use the
first of the two disks (hdc) and proceed as normal.  but the system will
not reboot the bios says "error failed to load operating system"

Also the fasttrack bios complains that the drives are not properly
mirrored and make me copy the image for hdc to hde

Any suggestions would help.

Also what is the performance hit with switching to software raid (for
mirrors)?
