If the word "proprietary" doesn't trigger any response, try "single-source"
which equates to "higher risk."

In this case, I would say that .NET is a bad idea because you are tied to
a single platform - IIS on Intel.  With Java, you can use any of a dozen
web servers / app servers on just as many platforms - you are not locked
into any particular vendor.  This provides the opportunity to migrate to
another platform.  Where I'm at now, we use WebSphere on AIX.  Looks the
same to me as WebSphere on Solaris, and the developers never see WebSphere.

Find out how they are mitigating the risks associated with a single-source
vendor.
