To permanently change the run level:
/etc/inittab
# Default runlevel. The runlevels used by RHS are:
# 0 - halt (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
# 1 - Single user mode
# 2 - Multiuser, without NFS (The same as 3, if you do not have
networking)
# 3 - Full multiuser mode
# 4 - unused
# 5 - X11
# 6 - reboot (Do NOT set initdefault to this)
#
id:5:initdefault:
-- change id:5:initdefault:
-- to be: id:3:initdefault:
(don't mess with the other entries in this file, you'll be sorry if you
do!)
"or boot as normal - press Control-Alt-2 to get a text console login -
tell it runlevel 3."
--- as the root user, run this command: init 3
You'll see several of the same startup commands run as you would see
during a normal boot, when finished, the display will be at the text
login.
If the X configuration is so far off that after boot you can't make out
what is on the screen, no sweat. Just wait long enough that you are sure
it's completely booted, press and hold the Control and the Alt keys, while
holding these, press the F1 key... you'll get a text login screen.

Got an old box that I installed a new version of RH on... The monitor
def is off and I need to:
1) force it to boot ascii, and
2) where does one turn on/*off* the graphical login?
thanks,
