Red Hat Newbie - What do I really need?

No you can install one or the other. But it's nice to have both.

7.3 has the new KDE 3.0 and uptodate will not upgrade to 7.3 from 7.2

It updates all the software for security issues.
Also uptodate isn't that simple to setup. You need to run rhn_register from 
command mode.

No, Redhat doesn't know what to do with NTFS and fact it won't even detect it 
on install.  SuSE will though!
