If you want a good IDE for Java, try
Sun Microsystem's SUN One Studio (Formely Forte)

The download is free (community edition) and comes
packaged with JDK 1.3. The Linux download is a
a bin file, so all you have to do is download, click
and install. It's a pretty big file (95MB), but it
runs faster than Borland's JBuilder 6 personal
edition...which btw is free.
I'm running RH 7.2, but I think you can run it on
most distributions.
