seeking broken sound driver advice

I had this problem. What I did was click the xmms menu and select 
Options/Preferences. You should get the Audio I/O plugins tab panel.
Mine was set on Disk Writer Plugin which I changed to
OSS Driver Plugin or eSound Output plugin which probably depends on the 
driver you use.
