Virtually all the telecomm companies made a similar mistake:
they bet heavily on very expensive central switching
equipment that was to be amortized over 10 or 15 years, and
that equipment is now becoming obsolete due to the rise of
packet switched networks.  I'm sure AT&T will be hurt, as
the others were.

Still, whoever picks up all that bankrupt fiber for a song
will then have unlimited bandwidth to sell at reduced cost
to themselves, just as the folks who bought the abandoned
Iridium system can now turn a profit using it.  So if you
pick the right players, I guess there's a profit to be had.
