"/etc/shadow-" What is the purpose of this file?

Bad dog!!!(Not being disparaging, just being cute)
They are important files.

/etc/passwd - User information
/etc/gshadow - User passwords.
/etc/group - Group information
/etc/gshadow - Group passwords and administrator info.
