Debian install for a desktop environment

Hello,

Which distribution would you recommend for a Debian desktop system?

Also, what are the differences between KDE and Gnome?

Does one have more software written for it?

Is one more stable than the other?

I will be installing Debian on a secondary partition on my system soon and 
wanted to get some feedback first as to which is the best way to go.

I want to learn enough to be able to get rid of Windows soon.
