Desktop is larger than the monitor screen. Can it be set to fit?

By default the X server sets your desktop to the size of your biggest
resolution you have listed.  You can either get rid of your largest
resolution or add:
Virtual 1024 768

replace 1024 768 with whatever resolution you are currently using your
your desktop.
