Updating Linux from an older to newer version

Yeah Redhat has an update function. I think it even 
puts a puts an icon in the form of a symlink on the
desktop. Anywho, the program is called "up2date" and
once you register the machine with the red hat network
you can then use up2date to upgrade whatever needs it
including the kernel. You can also use Ximian
Redcarpet
and that'll keep you updated with stuff like Mozilla
and Openoffice.org with very little fuss.
