How do I boot into text mode, without X?

No you type whatever your linux kernel label is, if you normally boot "linux" you would boot "linux 3" but since your running debian even runlevel 2 has *dm in it, you have to boot into runlevel 1 and remove it from at least runlevel 2 and then boot into runlevel 2 for a text login, yuou can also remove it from everything except 5 and use 5 as a grpahical login as most distro's do. I never understood why deb did it the way it does.
