You should just need to load the drivers. Not all drivers will work for
multiple cards, but that's probably been fixed for most.

Networking doesn't use devices in /dev. I don't know what the original
reasoning is. It's tradition that's been upheld. I wish they would because
then everything in *NIX would be a file.

I currently have a 4-port card and an on board nic on my firewall.

It works except my roommie had problems on his network that we haven't
straightened out.

Currently I'm using one incoming feed and two local networks. The second
incoming feed worked during testing, but it's not live right now. I need to
move the old connection.

I've done 4 nics on a box and not had problems. That was a few years ago. I
believe the kernel supports up to 16 physical network interfaces. Look in
the kernel documentation or google for 2.4 reviews from when it was released
for exacts.
