where is x's XC dir?

I am trying to patch from X server 4.1.0 to 4.2.0.

The patch readme says to unpack the four diff gz files and the 4.2.0 tgz file 
in the X11/XC directory. I don't seem to have this directory. Is this 
directory in the source tree and not the actual installed X tree?

Also the readme talks about a clean 4.1.0 directory to unpack the files in. 
Again Is Xfree86 talking about the X source tree or actual install. Since 
"clean" isn't really defined I assume it means a install with no errors 
during configure, compile, and install.
