Ctrl Alt F1 should be done after you are at the login prompt.  If you boot into
single user mode X shouldn't try to come up.  If it is, that is probably
something else that needs to be fixed.

under RH Xconfigurator is what I use to configure X (as root).  There might also
be xf86config program.
