What happens when you log in runleve 1 and run Sax2 again?

What is runleve 1? Is that the same as linux single? I can log in  to KDE,
but the screen is completely black when I do so, and therefore completely
unusable. I need some way to change the monitor settings without logging in
the "normal" way, without loading any desktop environment.
