duron problems

'lo all, back on the list after 3 odd weeks without a machine, since last one 
roasted itself
new machine is a Asus A7V133 with a duron 700Mhz (old machine was a generic 
with an athlon 650)
went to rip a new cd that I bought, to notice that my new machine generates 
TONS of garbage when playing mp3's with xmms (and mpg123, for that matter) 
while ripping
immediately stops when I stop ripping the disc.
Anyone experienced anything like this before, and how to fix it? :-)
