There's an option from the main install menu to configure the network. If
thet fails check that the module for your ethernet card has been loaded.

<alt>-<F2>
<cr>
ifconfig -a

If you don't see eth0 there, then you need to load the appropriate module.

cat /proc/pci

Determine what you ethernet card is from that. If you have to, resort to
opening the box and looking at the card :).

In the main install menu go into the kernel configuration submenu. There's a
net menu in there. The ethernet drivers are in that.

You have to configure the network first.

Debian's been able to install everything but the kernel and kernel modules
off the network for a couple of years. Getting the network setup can
sometimes be difficult, though.
